What Type of Shoes Are Best For Weightlifting?

What are the best shoes to wear for weightlifting? There are many questions and choices that needs to be answered. For example what shoes are best for powerlifting exercises, flats shoes or ones with heels? What about the best shoes for exercises such as squats and deadlifts.

Let us clarify which one is most appropriate. First and foremost weightlifting shoes are generally shoes with heels and are best for weightlifting due to additional elevation. This gives the lifter more balance and stability which also allows the lifter to have a bigger range of motion.

More range of motion means more muscle fibres being stimulated which equals better muscle growth and strength.

Weightlifting Shoe Benefits

  1. Provides improved stability and balance
  2. Allows for more range of movement for certain exercises
  3. Can instantly improve strength for certain lifts
  4. Promotes better exercise technique
  5. Helps people that lack ankle flexibility and people with poor hip mobility

The best shoes for squats are those weightlifting shoes, so shoes with elevated heels. This simply because these shoes provide the lifter with better balance. Also most people tend to have poor hip mobility and lack ankle flexibility, thus meaning they are unable to squat below 90 degrees.

You might be one of those people whenever squatting to reach down, you end up tip-toeing when in a deep squatted position. So whenever you squat below 90 degrees your heels tend to rise off the ground. This is a sign of poor ankle flexibility. Some unfortunate people’s heels rise even when their knees are above the 90 degree angle.

Deeps squats or other know as ass to the grass squats (ATG squats) promotes better gains. Better gains mean more muscle development and more strength gains. If you cannot do ATG squats then seriously think about purchasing weightlifting shoes. Do not rob yourself of making optimal gains.

Best Deadlift Shoes

What are the best shoes for deadlifts? This is sole dependant on the type of deadlift that one is trying to execute.

Deadlifts that target more of the posterior chain such as stiff-legged deadlifts and romanian deadlifts are best suited using weightlifting shoes. The posterior chain muscles involve the muscles running along your spine, the Gluteus Maximus (your butt) and your hamstrings.

If your workout routine includes conventional deadlifts which brings into play more of your quads then flat soles or flat shoes are more adequate. You can use weightlifting shoes but you will benefit more from flat soles.

The reason why flat soles are best is because you want your entire feet touching the ground beneath as much as possible. When you deadlift you are driving your heels to the ground with great force. So the closer your are to the ground the better you can drive and deadlift heavier weights. I recommend using the Chuck Taylor’s Converse shoes for deadlifting.
