Buying An Exercise Bike Guide
We have outlined and explained the exercise bike features referring to the comparison table. To read the definition of the exercise features skip this section and go straight down to the ‘Exercise Bikes Features’ heading below.
What do you look for when buying a stationary bike for home use?
Is it always daunting before purchasing fitness equipment, especially one that includes technical specifications such as exercise bikes. The first question you need to ask yourself is what type of bike do you need? To answer this question you need to know the types of bikes out there.
There simply two types of exercise bikes: exercise bikes and spinning bikes. It can be confusing as both these bikes are often referred as ‘exercise bikes’ or sometimes stationary bikes. However the easiest way to distinguish between the two is purely by looking at the design and appearance.
Spinning bikes have a flywheel which is attached at the front with chains resembling the real cycling experience. These bikes usually have the seats higher and have almost identical saddles (seats) as a real bicycle.
Not to complicate matters but there are also different types of exercise bikes. The main two are the recumbent exercise bikes and the upright exercise bikes. The recumbent exercise bikes are the one most commonly seen in gyms. These have back support and are more comfortable to ride.
What is a Flywheel?
Flywheel is the heart of most exercise bikes. The flywheel is generally situated at the front of the bike and acts as a mechanical wheel. It is basically a weighted metal disk. The flywheel is connected by a way of chain and pedal. As the pedal turns so does the flywheel similar to the wheels and pedals of an bicycle.
Generally the heavier the flywheel the more difficult it is to pedal. Therefore heavier flywheel means stronger resistance.
NOTE: Exercise bikes without a flywheel are cheaper in price. Bikes without flywheel feels more rigid which feels like an upward and downward motion.
What is Your Fitness Level?
Be honest and true to yourself and determine how fit you really are. Knowing your fitness level will help you make an appropriate decision in the type of exercise bike you will need.
To get straight to the point if you are fit or have cycled before then a spinning bike is going to be ideal. If you are a beginner and you have health issues such as joint pain then purchase an regular exercise bike either upright or recumbent exercise bike is fine. When you progress you can always upgrade and a spin bike.
Remember that regular exercise bikes allows you to exercise for longer periods with comfort and burns calories. This way you are exercising with low intensity which reduces the risk of injury. Spinning bikes on the other hand can provide you with a whole body workout by pedalling while standing. Standing while pedalling engages your core and increases the intensity of your workout.
So if your fitness goal is to lose weight/fat or you just want to enhance your fitness level even more so then you will get more with a spin bike.
Magnetic and Direct-Contact Resistance Bikes
All exercise bikes have some form of resistance, which increases the difficulty of your workout. This is where things can get a tad more technical. As the heading already suggest there are two types of resistance that you find in stationary bikes.
The two types of bike resistance are direct-contact bikes and magnetic resistance bikes. Direct-contact bikes are also referred as friction resistance bikes. So friction resistance bikes have the brake pad directly contacting the flywheel causing friction. The more friction applied the harder your workout becomes.
Magnetic resistance bikes are more innovative in terms of engineering. They involve no direct-contact with the flywheel where electromagnetic induction creates the resistance. The resistance levels can be controlled electronically by a touch of a button.
Magnetic and Friction PROS and CONS
Magnetic Resistance Bikes
- Quieter than direct-contact resistance
- Their parts do not wear and tear
- Premium bikes that should last many years
- Continuous resistance throughout
- Affordable price
- Provides great accuracy and reliability
Adjustability and Comfort
One aspect to look for in a bike is adjustability and comfort. Does the bike provide adjustments to the either the handle bars and most importantly the seat? We are all made differently and we come in all sorts of sizes. People are tall/short, long/short limbs and long/short torso.
The individual factors need to be considered when buying an exercise bike. The bike must provide appropriate adjustments to fit the user. Therefore ensure the bike have seat and handle bar adjustments.
Promoting good posture is so important especially now that office jobs are becoming the norm. The exercise bike has to allow you to sit comfortably and have you positioned in a way that encourages better posture.
Exercise Bike Features
in this section we explain what each feature means in the comparison table above.

By this feature we are referring to whether the handles have the capability to alter its position.
The adjustable seats feature is an important one to customise the seating position for a comfortable ride. Many bikes don’t allow the handles to adjust its position as the seat can be adjusted. In terms of adjustments, can the seat alter its height and does it move closer and further away from the handle.
A console helps the user keep track of their workout. The console tracks: distance, time, scans pulse/heart rate, calories and speed.

Great bike, very easy to build in half an hour and very solid. I’m 6’3 and this bike is a perfect size for me.
Excellent item and same standard as the bikes in my gym.
Would definitely recommend.

This spin bike is superb. It is great value for money too. We wanted something that was also quiet in operation as it is in the home gym and we have young kids that we did not want to disturb as the only time we get to exercise is whilst they are asleep!
Furthermore, I must add that the customer service of JLL is fantastic!

Ultrasport F-Bike 200-B, this exercise bike is rated 5 on list but it is the most popular in this category. Its huge interest lies on fact that most people looking to buy an exercise bike wants reliability and space saving. This bike folds incredibly into a neat easy to store fitness equipment. I needed a bike for Physio, having had a major op on my Achilles tendon, so I didn’t want to pay too much money, but needed one with a computer. This bike far exceeded my expectations. It was easy to build (so my dad says!) & it’s big enough to feel stable & solid, yet compact enough for it to sit happily in one corner of my not very big lounge. The computer functionality is great – measures time, heart rate, distance & rpm – all of which are critical for me to know at the moment. I would recommend this bike to anyone – in fact, my Physio has asked me for the details so he can give to other patients!

Very Cheap, very sturdy, very easy to put together, neat and tidy. Delivery came following day. I’m 5ft and it fits perfectly! (Being on the lowest seat setting tho). Monitor is very easy to use and is very clear and simple. Love the pulse monitor and the different levels for cycling. Seat is nice and comfy. Very very impressed considering price. Doesn’t feel cheap or tacky at all. I feel like I have underpaid if anything!
I use it everyday to improve health and tone. Love it! Buy it!
